The Biggest Verified Casino Jackpots in History

Stories of record-breaking casino wins circulate constantly, and a lot of the specific figures attached to them online don’t hold up to scrutiny – invented winner stories, made-up dollar amounts, and jackpots credited to the wrong casino entirely. This is a look at the wins that are actually documented, with real dates, real venues, and sources that can be checked.

Three Records That Are Actually Verifiable

Largest Slot Machine Payout

$39.7 million – Excalibur Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, March 2003. A 25-year-old software engineer visiting family in Las Vegas won the sum on a Megabucks progressive slot after a roughly $100 wager. Guinness World Records has listed it as the largest slot machine payout in history for over two decades, and it remains the reference point most gaming historians use for a single land-based slot jackpot.

Largest Online Slot Jackpot

€17,879,645 (£13.2 million / $20.1 million) – won by UK soldier Jon Heywood on Mega Moolah in October 2015, playing at Betway. Guinness World Records’ own current listing still names this the largest jackpot payout in an online slot machine game, with no later win recorded as having taken the title. Separately, and on a narrower basis, a Michigan player reportedly won just over $22.4 million on a different progressive slot at a U.S.-regulated online casino in November 2025 – widely reported as the largest online casino jackpot at a U.S.-licensed operator, which is a different, more specific claim than the global record Heywood still holds.

Largest Poker Tournament Prize (For Years)

$12 million – Jamie Gold, 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event. The tournament drew a record 8,773 entrants that year, and Gold’s first-place prize stood as the largest in WSOP Main Event history for 17 years. Daniel Weinman’s $12.1 million win in 2023 – itself driven by a record 10,043-entry field – edged past it, and remains the largest Main Event first-place prize in WSOP history as of the 2026 Main Event.

Where the Numbers Get Murkier

Two categories that get cited constantly in “biggest wins” articles are genuinely hard to verify with a specific record figure:

Crypto casino jackpots. Progressive jackpot slots on crypto platforms can and do pay out seven-figure sums – the game mechanics are the same ones used on traditional online casinos, just funded in cryptocurrency. But specific “biggest ever” dollar claims attached to named crypto operators are rarely backed by independent, checkable records, since most of these platforms don’t publish audited win histories the way licensed operators reporting to regulators do. Treat any specific crypto jackpot “record” you see quoted with real skepticism unless it links to a verifiable source.

Single-bet roulette wins. Roulette doesn’t have a progressive jackpot – a win is simply the payout on whatever was staked, so “biggest roulette win” claims are really about who was willing to bet the most. The most famous documented example is Ashley Revell’s televised 2004 bet, who staked roughly $135,000 – essentially everything he owned – on red at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and won. Larger individual bets have certainly been placed in VIP rooms since, but without a jackpot structure there’s no single verifiable “record” the way there is for a slot machine.

Why “Betting Systems” Don’t Change Your Odds

Progression systems like Martingale (doubling your bet after a loss) or Fibonacci (increasing stakes based on the Fibonacci sequence) are frequently marketed as ways to “win big” at roulette or similar games. Neither changes the underlying house edge. They restructure when and how much you win or lose, but the expected value of every individual bet stays exactly the same – and table limits or a losing streak can wipe out a bankroll before a system has a chance to “recover.” Treat these as risk-management approaches at best, not methods for beating the math.

Why These Records Don’t Change Your Own Odds

Life-changing wins like the ones above are real, documented, and worth knowing about – but they’re also extraordinarily rare relative to the number of people who play. Progressive jackpot slots pay out big precisely because a tiny fraction of an enormous number of bets ever hits the top prize; poker tournament wins at that scale require beating thousands of skilled opponents in a single event. None of that changes the odds on any individual spin or hand you play. Enjoy the stories, but don’t mistake them for a realistic expectation of your own session.
