Blackjack Rules for Beginners

Blackjack is one of the most popular table games anywhere, largely because it’s genuinely simple to learn while still rewarding players who study it properly. Unlike poker, you’re playing against the dealer, not other players – the goal is a hand worth as close to 21 as possible without going over.

How a Round Works

You and the dealer each get two cards. Yours are dealt face up; the dealer shows one card and keeps the other hidden. From there, you decide how to play your hand based on what you can see.

A “blackjack” (natural 21) is an ace paired with any 10-value card as your first two cards. It typically pays 3:2 – meaningfully better than the standard 1:1 payout on other wins, which is exactly why it’s the hand every player hopes to see.

Your Options at the Table

Hit

Draw another card to improve your total. Go over 21 and you bust – an automatic loss regardless of what the dealer has.

Stand

Keep your current hand. The dealer then reveals their hidden card and plays out fixed rules – typically hitting on 16 or less, standing on 17 or more.

Double Down

With a strong starting total (commonly 10 or 11), double your bet in exchange for exactly one more card.

Split

If your first two cards are a matching pair, split them into two separate hands with an equal additional bet, then play each independently. Splitting two aces is a special case: you typically get only one card per hand, and a resulting 21 doesn’t count as a blackjack.

Insurance: if the dealer shows an ace, you can place a side bet (half your original stake) that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. It’s a well-known bad bet mathematically for the basic-strategy player – most experienced players skip it entirely, since it carries a high house edge on its own regardless of your hand.

Payouts

Outcome Payout
Blackjack (Ace + 10-value) 3:2 (some tables pay 6:5 – avoid these if you can)
Standard win 1:1
Insurance win 2:1 on the insurance bet only
Push (tie) Bet returned
Bust Loss

A Few Basic Strategy Fundamentals

📚 General Starting Points

  • Hit on a hard total of 8 or less – there’s no risk of busting.
  • Stand on a hard total of 17 or more in most common rule sets.
  • Split aces and 8s – these are close to universal recommendations.
  • Avoid splitting 10-value cards or 5s.
  • Double down on 11 against most dealer upcards.

These are genuinely useful starting points, but full basic strategy varies with the exact table rules – deck count, whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, and doubling/surrender availability all shift the optimal play slightly. Our full basic strategy guide covers the complete chart.

Why Blackjack Rewards Learning It Properly

With correct basic strategy, blackjack’s house edge can fall to around 0.5% depending on table rules – among the lowest of any standard casino game. That edge only holds if you’re actually playing the optimal move in each situation; deviating from strategy hands a meaningful chunk of that advantage back to the house. Manage your bankroll carefully, practice with free games before betting real money, and treat the basic strategy chart as something worth learning rather than guessing at table-side.
