Caribbean Stud Poker: How to Play, Rules & Strategy

Caribbean Stud Poker blends classic poker hand rankings with simple, fixed gameplay mechanics – no bluffing, no reading opponents, just you against the dealer’s hand. It’s more structured than blackjack but far less involved than Texas Hold’em, which is part of why it’s remained a fixture at land-based and online casinos for decades.

How to Play

🎮 Round Structure

  1. Place your ante.
  2. You receive five face-down cards; the dealer receives five cards with one face-up.
  3. Based on your hand and the dealer’s visible card, choose to bet (double your ante to continue) or fold (forfeit your ante and exit the round).
  4. The dealer reveals their hand. To “qualify,” the dealer needs at least Ace-King.
Dealer doesn’t qualify

You win even money on your ante, and your additional bet is simply returned.

Dealer qualifies, you win

Both bets pay out – the ante at even money, the raise according to the paytable below.

Dealer qualifies, dealer wins

You lose both bets. A tie pushes both bets back to you.

Payout Table

Hand Payout
High card / Pair 1:1
Two pairs 2:1
Three of a kind 3:1
Straight 4:1
Flush 5:1
Full house 7:1
Four of a kind 20:1
Straight flush 50:1
Royal flush 100:1

Paytables vary by casino – some pay less on full houses and quads to raise the house edge. Always check the table’s posted payouts before sitting down.

Basic Strategy: When to Raise, When to Fold

Raise

  • Any pair or better – always raise.
  • Ace-King-Queen-Jack-x.
  • Ace-King-Queen-x-x or Ace-King-Jack-x-x, when one of your cards matches the dealer’s upcard.
  • Ace-King-10-x-x, when the dealer’s card matches one of yours.
Fold

  • Anything below Ace-King with no matching card against the dealer’s upcard.
  • No pairing potential and a weak kicker structure.

A widely used simplified rule of thumb: raise with any hand of Ace-King-Jack-8-3 or stronger. It isn’t mathematically perfect, but it tracks optimal strategy closely enough for practical play at the table.

The House Edge

Caribbean Stud Poker’s house edge is usually quoted as roughly 5.2% of the ante, or a little over 2.5% of total money wagered once you account for how often the raise bet actually gets placed. Neither figure is unusually favorable compared to blackjack or baccarat – the appeal here is the structure and payout potential, not a mathematical edge over other games.

Who This Game Suits

✅ Good Fit If You…

  • Like poker hand rankings but want a fixed, no-bluffing format.
  • Prefer playing against the dealer rather than other players.
  • Want a simple decision tree (bet or fold) rather than continuous action.
  • Appreciate a high top-end payout on rare hands like a royal flush.

Learning the fold/raise thresholds above is the single biggest factor in playing this game well – deviating from them in either direction (raising too loosely or folding too often) increases the house’s edge substantially compared to disciplined play.
