Tournament Poker Formats: Sit & Gos, MTTs & Satellites Explained

“Tournament poker” covers several genuinely different formats, each rewarding a slightly different approach. Knowing which format you’re actually playing – and adjusting your strategy to it – matters as much as any individual hand decision.

The Formats

Sit & Go (Single-Table)

Starts as soon as enough players register – no fixed schedule. Shorter and more predictable than multi-table events, ranging from heads-up duels to full 9-10 player tables.

Multi-Table Tournaments (MTTs)

Scheduled start times, potentially thousands of entrants, with players redistributed across tables as the field shrinks. Longer time commitment, but prize pools scale with the field size.

Satellite Tournaments

Lower-cost events that award entry into a bigger, pricier tournament rather than paying cash directly – often run in stages leading up to major series like the WSOP or EPT.

Bounty (Knockout) Tournaments

Part of your buy-in becomes a cash bounty on your head – eliminating another player pays you directly, adding an extra incentive layer beyond simply advancing in the standard payout structure.

Strategy Shifts by Tournament Stage

📊 Adjusting as the Tournament Progresses

  • Early stage: Blinds are small relative to stacks – play patient and selective, and avoid unnecessary coin-flip situations you don’t need to take.
  • Middle stage: Blinds start pressuring stacks meaningfully – selective blind-stealing and stack awareness become more important.
  • Bubble and late stage: Payout jumps become significant, and ICM (Independent Chip Model) considerations mean chip stacks stop mapping linearly to their cash value – see our cash vs. tournament guide for what this means in practice.
  • Final table: Payout jumps are largest here, and short-stack survival calculations against deep-stacked opponents genuinely change correct strategy from a pure chip-EV approach.

Format-Specific Notes

Satellites deserve a specific mental adjustment: since the prize is a fixed tournament seat rather than a variable cash payout, the correct strategy often shifts toward preserving your stack once you’re comfortably positioned to qualify, rather than continuing to maximize chip accumulation the way you would in a standard MTT. Bounty tournaments similarly shift incentives – sometimes it’s correct to take a slightly worse chip-equity spot specifically to collect a bounty, particularly against a short stack near elimination.

Practical Tips Across All Formats

🃏 General Tournament Habits

  • Size your bankroll for tournament variance specifically – a 50-100+ buy-in guideline is a common starting point, since even skilled players go long stretches without a min-cash.
  • Pace yourself physically – longer MTTs are as much an endurance test as a strategic one.
  • Take notes on recurring opponents where the platform allows it, even in fast-paced online formats.
  • Review your bubble and final-table decisions specifically – these are where ICM misunderstanding costs the most equity.

Whichever format you’re playing, the underlying hand-reading and positional fundamentals from our Poker Strategy 101 guide still apply – tournaments just add a layer of stack-preservation and payout-structure thinking on top.
