Types of Poker: A Beginner’s Guide to Every Popular Variant

“Poker” isn’t one game – it’s a family of related games that share hand rankings but differ significantly in how cards are dealt and combined. This guide introduces the most-played variants so you know what you’re looking at before sitting down at any of them.

Texas Hold’em

By far the most-played variant worldwide, and the format behind the WSOP Main Event. Each player gets two private hole cards; five community cards are revealed in stages (flop, turn, river), and players build their best five-card hand from any combination of the seven available cards. If the best available hand uses only the community cards, the pot is split among all remaining players.

Omaha

Structurally similar to Hold’em, but each player receives four hole cards and must use exactly two of them – no more, no less – combined with exactly three of the five community cards. The extra hole cards create far more possible combinations, which tends to produce bigger average hand strength at showdown and rewards sharper hand-reading.

Omaha Hi/Lo (Omaha 8-or-Better)

An Omaha variant where the pot splits between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand (five unpaired cards ranked eight or lower). The best possible low is A-2-3-4-5, which also happens to qualify as a straight for high – making it possible, in rare cases, to scoop the entire pot.

Seven Card Stud

The dominant poker variant before Hold’em took over, still played in mixed-game formats today. Players receive seven cards across five betting rounds (three face-down, four face-up) with no community cards at all; the best five-card hand from those seven wins. A fixed ante starts each hand, and the player showing the lowest face-up card is required to make a small forced bet called the “bring-in.”

Five Card Draw

Often the first variant people learn, especially in home games. Each player gets five private cards and can exchange up to all five for new ones in a single draw. Two betting rounds – before and after the draw – keep it simple while still testing hand-reading and bluffing.

Which One Should You Start With?

Texas Hold’em remains the most sensible entry point – the largest player pools, the most available strategy resources, and the format used in almost every major televised tournament. Once you’re comfortable with hand rankings and basic strategy, Omaha and Seven Card Stud reward the same core skills (position, pot odds, reading opponents) in different combinatorial contexts, which is why many serious players eventually branch out into mixed-game formats rather than treating them as unrelated games.
