Texas Hold’em Pre-Session Strategy Checklist
This isn’t a full strategy explainer – for that, see our Poker Strategy 101, preflop, and postflop guides. This is a quick checklist to run through before you sit down and while you’re at the table – the kind of thing worth bookmarking rather than reading start to finish every session.
Before You Sit Down
- Bankroll sized correctly? Roughly 20-30 buy-ins for cash, 50-100+ for tournaments as a starting reference.
- Mentally clear? Not tilted, angry, exhausted, or distracted before the first hand is even dealt.
- Distractions minimized? Phone, TV, and multitasking all measurably hurt decision quality.
- Session goal set? Playing to win, to practice a specific skill, or purely for fun each call for a different mindset.
During the Session
- Range matched to position, not just hand strength alone.
- Raising or folding as the default – limping only with a clear reason.
- Board texture checked before betting or calling on autopilot.
- Bet sizing chosen with intent, not habit.
- Pot odds actually calculated on real drawing decisions, not estimated by feel.
- Opponent tendencies noted as the session goes on, not just at showdown.
- Adjustments made per opponent type rather than one fixed approach for everyone.
- Stack size and effective SPR considered before committing chips.
- Tilt symptoms recognized early – stepping away is always an option.
After the Session
Review, don’t just replay. A quick pass over a few key hands – especially ones you weren’t sure about in the moment – does more for your long-term win rate than another hour at the tables on tilt. Tools like hand-history reviewers can help where platform rules allow them, but a simple written note on 2-3 hands per session is enough to start building real self-awareness about recurring leaks.
Poker rewards consistency more than any single brilliant play – this checklist exists to help you show up prepared and leave a little sharper than you started, session after session.
